Water should be tested at least weekly by the pool owner using the test kit provided and a sample should be submitted to the owner's chemical supplier at least once per month for "professional" testing.  When you are given the test results, instructions on necessary chemical adjustments will be provided.

Recommended test parameter ranges are provided below:

                         Test Name                        Recommended Range

Free Chlorine                     1.0  to 3.0 ppm

Total Chlorine                    1.0 to 3.0 ppm

Combined Chlorine            0.0 to 0.2 ppm

                          pH                                     7.4 to 7.6

                          Hardness                            200 to 300 ppm

                         Alkalinity                              80 to 120 ppm

The pool chemical supplier who sells you supplies should test your water free of charge and provide a results report that includes indication of action required and amount of each chemical to add.  Remember, add only one chemical per 24 hour period to avoid chemical interactions causing you to overshoot on one parameter when attempting to adjust several simultaneously.

If you want to calculate the amount of chemical addition required to change a parameter a given amount, the site at Horizon Pool Supply can be helpful.

There are several options in the area for purchasing pool chemicals and having water tests performed free of charge.  Warehouse Pool Supply at 20021 Gulf Freeway is just one option and they do an excellent testing job and have competitive chemical prices.
