Diatomaceous earth is a porous powder with microscopic openings, that, when magnified, look like tiny sponges. Clear water can pass through these openings, but particles, as small as one to three microns, are trapped during the first pass through the media. Diatomaceous earth filters have internal elements that become coated with diatomaceous earth after it has been added to the water stream going to the filter. It is this 'filter cake' that strains dirt, dust, algae, and some forms of bacteria from the water.

As material accumulates on the filtration leaves, the pressure drop across the filter increases.  When your filter is placed in service the first time, it will be "precoated" by adding diatomaceous earth through your pool skimmer cleaning wells.  The pressure indicated on a gauge located near the top of the enclosure should be recorded.  Once the pressure indication increases by 8 to 10 psig, it is necessary to backwash the filter and add diatomaceous earth again to establish a new filtration coating (see filter backwash link in the equipment section).

A cloudy pool than be the result of many thing but effective filtration is the single most important thing you can do to have a clear sparkling pool.  The pool should be circulated at least 4 hours per day which is adequate for all water in the pool to pass through the circulation pump and filtration system one time.  Because of mixing that occurs when the water returns to the pool, as many as 64 "turnovers" can be required for all pool water to be filtered.  This means that circulation for 256 hours (4 times 64)  or 10.7 days of constant circulation is required to achieve total filtration of the pool system. The point being made is not that one should circulate the pool more than 4 hours per day but that if one allows control parameters to get outside recommended limits considerable time may be required to rectify the situation.

Things that can contribute to cloudy water include:

  • Poor filtration or a torn filter cover
  • Presence of algae
  • Chlorine level is too low
  • Calcium hardness is too high
  • Stabilizer level is too high
  • Pool pH is too high
  • High concentration of metals in the water - highly unlikely situation
